A GREAT man.

On Tuesday, Mr. Nielson and I took our children to the funeral of one of
the finest, most talented burn surgeon we know, Dr. Caruso.
In fact, Dr. Caruso isn't just any burn surgeon; he is the surgeon
whose capable and wise hands saved our lives.
I was proud to share with others who attended the service that
Charlotte was here today because Dr. Caruso saved my life.
The little Nies are thriving today because both of their parents were preserved
by this good man and the other doctors and nurses at the burn center in Arizona.
I will be forever honored to have known him.
His funeral was a beautiful tribute to his life.
He will be missed by so many.
He was a wonderful man and an excellent doctor, and I do believe
that one day I will see him again.
Dr. Caruso's passing is heartbreaking, and at his funeral, he brought together
so many wonderful friends.
I got to see and hug so many of the other
doctors and nurses who aided in my recovery, many of whom
I have become dear, dear friends with them.

And I have Dr. Caruso to thank for that.

The new Burn Center.

One of the reasons we went to Arizona was to be a part
of an exclusive tour of the new Valleywise Health Medical Center
and reception to honor Dr. Daniel Caruso and his extraordinary efforts
and vision for the new Arizona Burn Center - Valleywise Health.
Dr. Caruso is one of the reasons Christian and I are still alive.
He passed away in 2017, and I will never forget him.
Christian and I were honored to speak at the reception to honor
his legacy and share personal stories about this great man,
We also met up with one of the nurses, Amber, who cared for Christian and me
when we were patients. I was SHOOK to see her. I haven't seen
or talked to her for YEARS! She said she spoke before, but I was
probably heavily medicated because I don't remember.
But how cool to tour this beautiful facility with her!
I was feeling all sorts of feelings!
We walked to the roof where the helipad was and
looked out into the Valley.
I felt so much excitement for this community getting this
 much-needed, much-deserved hospital!
It was really emotional for me to walk the
halls of this new sacred hospital with Christian and my children
(minus Gigs, who was home sick)
led by the chief of the Burn Center and my dear friend, Dr. Foster.
The burn community is family- including my children!
Our family will be FOREVER grateful for the AZBC and all the many
doctors, nurses, therapists, and techs (just like Claire in a few weeks!! EEEK!)
who blessed and saved our lives.
Burn staff; doctors, nurses, techs, etc.:

Christian and I, with Dr. Caruso's wife, Diane:

Then we finished the evening off at dinner with the Nies
where I took thousands of photos of Claire and Ollie
because I'm going to miss them SOSOSOSOSO MUCH!

Dr. Caruso

Earlier this week one of my very favorite burn doctors,
 Dr. Caruso passed away.
Dr. Caruso saved my life...more than once, too.
(You don't say that about someone every day, you know?).
My skin was is patched together by his talented hands.
He truly believed in me, he believed in my family,
and he believed in my recovery.
He was kind and talented and larger than life.
I, along with his family, close friends, the burn community,
and fellow medical workers will miss him deeply!

You can watch Dr. Caruso's 20/20 interview
about my story HERE.

I did not come this far only to come this far.

Christian and I are really excited to be a part of the
Since it's a virtual event, we will be streaming from here in North Carolina,
Jane in Arizona, and maybe Sister Nielson, who is serving a
full-time mission in New Hampshire might make an appearance?!
Valleywise Health has made this night so special for our family, and we hope our
story will highlight the amazing work that went on while we were patients.
So many hours and tireless nights, so much work and energy from
so many amazing skilled doctors, nurses, and medical staff.
Words can't even express my deepest gratitude.
We were also very humbled to acknowledge and share our love
for the great Dr. Daniel Caruso, who patched us back together.
Without him, I wouldn't be here. Sadly Dr. Caruso passed away in 2017; his memory and our admiration for him will forever shine bright.
*You can still register and watch the event HERE*
My life just keeps marching on with stress and worry, and
each day, I find the strength to let my faith
flourish so I can, as President Nelson says,
"...help turn challenges into unparalleled growth and opportunity."
In Claire's most recent letter home, she reminded me of Elder Holland's
"No matter what challenge you are currently facing, remember:
"I did not come this far only to come this far."
Keep going. Keep trying. Keep trusting. Keep believing.
Keep growing. As I have said before,
Heaven is cheering you on today, tomorrow, and forever."

I believe Elder Holland, and I believe Claire!
I'm a miracle, and I prove it every day when I wake up and live.
Also, I made a promo video for the event tonight,
and I kind of think I look like a muppet.

My Arizona Men

Mr. Nielson and I are in Arizona enjoying citrus and sunshine.
We came down to attend the Burn and Trauma Festival of Trees
at The Camelback Inn in Phoenix
  We even got all fancy-schmancy!

We also some work done to our faces.
Dr. M. used his laser beam to break up the scar tissue for
more movement and comfort.
We also stopped by the burn unit and had a little visit with
 Dr. L. and Dr. Caruso.
Dr. Caruso is the man in the burn unit, and if he on your team, you will win.
Yep, pretty sure about that.
One time I blogged something that was not very nice about Dr. L.
and that was not such a good idea because he had his secretary
call me at home to tell me that he wanted to talk to me about it.
I was slightly scared...actually I was terrified!
We had a good chat and I now completely adore the man!

Nie York City!

Twenty New York Moments
from our trip back east from November 22-27, 2009:

 20. Nicholas fell down the steps in JFK airport and got a nice-sized goose egg.
 19.  Claire put her hand on the Hostess's table at
dinner and it broke and then somehow fell on top of her,
which then broke the computer, then broke
the delicate amaryllis & vase.
It broke our hearts and we didn't eat dinner that night in the restaurant.
Instead, we nursed a sad Toad back to health and had room service.
(But the hotel sent to our room cookies and milk for Claire
with a note that said: "Get well soon, Claire!").  (In the Green Room for The Today Show

 18. Meeting Matt Laurer and Meredith Vieira on The Today Show!
We chatted about kids and how he wakes up at 4:30
to arrive at the set every morning.
I asked Matt since he has to get up so early each day what time he goes to bed.
(Why do I care about these things? I don't know).
He says he goes to bed at 8:30, the same time as his children.
He also told me he hated eating rubber chicken.
I told him I don't even eat chicken at all.
I don't even know why we were talking about chicken
since our interview was like at 6:30 in the morning.
17. Meredith Vieira hooked us up with Macy’s Day parade tickets
 because she said to me,
"If I can’t get them, then who can?!”
She was SO very nice and soooo super cute with Ollie.
16.  I got my make-up done right next to Al Roker.
15. Going to the White Christmas musical on Broadway with
the girls; Claire, Jane, Mom, Lucy, and Courtney.
We also got to visit backstage, meet the players,
and go behind the scenes to see all the cool
tricks, wigs, costumes, and props. Thanks, Mari!

14. Nicholas refused to wear his shoes or sweater for
 The Today Show interview.
Then he made tooting noises and climbed under the couch
during my chat with Matt.
It was hilarious and very frustrating at the same time.
(OK, I admit it, I didn’t want him to wear the
helicopter shirt on national television! Can you blame me?)
13. Getting the sweetest kiss from Ann Curry.
She had a gorgeous green dress on that day and is absolutely soft and gracious.
 12. Dressing up at night to visit the city.
 11. Going to Tavern on the Green in Central Park.
The food was over-priced and kind of gross.  But it's iconic.
 10. Ollie talking me into buying a three-pack ironman set
in the FAO Schwartz toy store.
It's been the best purchase I've ever made.
They haven't left his hands once.  Not even to sleep.
 9.  The kids go to sleep at midnight every night,
(are we're on the East Coast!).
Come to think of it, this isn't a highlight, really.
8. Alicia Keys meeting my girls…and the girls don’t care.
They will someday though.

 7. After getting a high fever and feeling very sick on Thanksgiving Eve,
Christian and I took a taxi to the New York Presbyterian hospital ER.
I have a very large and very sore open wound on my leg that is very infected.
The burn unit admitted me and we stayed the night and all day on Thanksgiving.
This, as you know, wasn't my first stay in the burn unit on Thanksgiving.
What a gigantic BUMMER!
6.  Mr. Nielson and I cuddled on my hospital bed that overlooked the East river
half laughing, but mostly crying over our misfortune.
That turn of events had us counting our blessings which then brought
us to prayers of Thanksgiving which is why we celebrate this holiday anyway.
So I guess it wasn't all that bad.
After some heavy heavy IV antibiotics, they dressed my wound and called
Dr. Caruso in the burn center in Phoenix.
Sounds like I'll be back to surgery in January of next year.
That's just the news I want to hear!
I missed the Macy’s day parade that Meridith Vieira got us prime tickets for.
But my kids and family all got to go, and that's what matters anyway!
Also, the hospital misplaced the new green flats
that I got especially for the trip.  That was tragic.
I was discharged from the hospital in blue footies.
5. I lay in bed recovering with a throw-up bowl
next to dad who agreed to stay with me while everyone else
went to my cousin Ryan, and his wifeKimberly’s
apartment in Harlem for Thanksgiving dinner.
Later, they told me that they took three wrong subway routes
and made it to dinner an hour late.
But Mr. Nielson said dinner was exquisite in every way!
Dad ordered up pumpkin soup and crackers for our Thanksgiving dinner.

4. I'm pretty sure Nicholas successfully spilled twenty
out of the twenty-two drinks he had on the trip.
In restaurants, in the airport, on the airplane, and in his stroller.
Not to mention breaking four glasses. FOUR!
3. A very old man in one of the café’s we ate at
got really mad at me for letting my boys eat so loudly.
What?
He told me that my kids were not normal and he
had never heard kids eat so loudly before.
(We're not in Utah anymore, Toto).
But it doesn't stop there, oh no,
he also told the manager who did nothing because...seriously?
2. Central Park...what more can I say?
(Betsy and Andrew in the park
 1. My Mom asked the flight attendant when we landed in NYC
if she was “spreading the news".
The flight attendant didn’t laugh or think it was funny.
 (Like I did).
I think Frank would have laughed.
ALSO: My mom stood next to Hoda outside
singing along with Alicia Keys and after I said,
"Mom, what was it like budding up with Hoda?"
"With who?"
She had no idea.
Thanks Lexi and The Today Show!!
This was such an amazing trip from start to finish!

Halloween 2014

  The Nielson family Halloween 2014:
Claire: A teenage witch
 Jane: Annie
Oliver: Surgeon; Dr. Caruso, one of my burn surgeons
Nicholas: Fighter pilot (with mustache)
Charlotte: Olivia, the pig.
And Mr. Nielson and I just wear masks every year.
Before the trick-or-treating begins, we have our spooky family dinner.
Always complete with pumpkin-shaped bread bowls and my famous chili.
Mr. Nielson adds dry ice to the root beer
and The Sweet Tooth Fairy's darling cupcakes for after dinner.
(Because we need more sugar).

Halloween this year was perfect.
The weather was perfect, and it was pretty darn
perfect that Halloween landed on a Friday.
That meant that we could all stay out late and eat candy by the fire together
after an entire evening of trick-or-treating, knowing we didn't have to
rush off to bed.
It also meant that Mr. Nielson and I could
watch a spooky movie (I am Legend) together, snuggled in our bed.
It was also perfect because I felt healthy. I saw my
children excited about the holiday and dressing up.
And we all loved watching Lottie experience it all.
We are always so lucky to have Justin come and
photograph our significant life events, and
Halloween is definitely one of those days.

 All together now...
Oh, and let's not forget the Primary
 Halloween bike ride/parade after school:
I want my children to be happy; I want them to remember that our family
was always their best support and their best friends.
I want all family life and events- happy, complex, challenging,
and even difficult- to be their best memories. Ever, because
together we can do anything.

 The End.
