One foot in front of the other

(photos by Jed Wells, 2009)
I put one foot in front of the other, and before I knew it we had rounded the last turn.
I surprised myself by not being out of breath at all.
I was finishing even stronger than I had hoped.
I was strong and healthy, and had just climbed a quick one thousand feet to prove it.
I turned to look at the view, and Christian stood next to me and wrapped his arms around me.
I soaked in the magnificent views,  I was just where I had hoped I would be, and
with just the people I had hoped to share the day.
Yes, I was very proud of me, but I was even more grateful for us-- the people
close to me and far away who had created a community that helped me heal.
Christian and my parents, my brothers and sisters and their families, my beautiful children,
and the strangers and friends who had reached out to us when we needed them.
I couldn't have done it without them.
